HotHotHaiti! Introduces Gina Samson

You Don’t Know Haiti Until You Celebrate With Us!

Meet Gina Samson, one of the featured artists at HotHotHaiti! Gina’s artwork is influenced by the rich cultural heritage and vibrant colors of the Caribbean, as well as by the New York City urban environment. Originally from Port au Prince, Gina regularly exhibits in the New York Metropolitan area, and her work is featured in several corporate and private collections.

In her view, artwork reflects the importance of creation and imagination in everyone’s life. Working primarily in painting, collage and drawing, she aims to create works that incite reflection, and bring to the viewer an appreciation of the pride, resilience and cultural achievements of the African diaspora. Gina’s artwork explores human experiences of strength, resilience, and renewal through expressive portraits, depictions of the human figure and abstractions of line and color, seeking to capture a fleeting mood or emotion, and the experience of population movement, dispersion and adaptation that is the African diaspora.

In Gina’s words, “Art is a celebration of life’s journey… through the artist’s voice and expression, it weaves together hope and reality, joy and pain, separation and convergence, alienation and communion, closeness and abandonment, poverty and abundance, harmony and conflict… Art begins deep in the well of our consciousness.
While I am in the process of creating, memories and experiences as well as current events, feelings and emotions come into play; I call upon my childhood years in Haiti and the Caribbean, the intensity of the New York urban environment and my favorite jazz music for inspiration.”
